10 At-Home Remedies to Boost Your Libido
If there’s one word out in cyberspace that is easy to find a TON of information on, it’s “libido”. We get why too. It’s because if there’s one thing all of us want to have, it’s a great sex life. And that? That requires having a healthy sex drive.
Here’s the challenge. If your libido is currently not as strong as you’d like it to be, please remember that it isn’t just about your physical health (although that is an important part of it!). A strong sex drive is also about what’s going on with you psychologically.
That’s why, before getting into some at-home things that you can try, we need to mention that spending quality time together, holding hands and cuddling and doing things like really listening to one another are all things that can help keep your libido intact.
At the same time, if you’re currently doing pretty well in the emotional department and you’re simply looking for a few ways to kick you and your libido into overdrive, we’ve got 10 tips that are affordable, easy and super-duper effective too!
1. Take an Herbal Supplement
Unfortunately, a lot of us don’t get the nutrients that we need from our diet because we don’t eat as healthy as we should. Fortunately, something that provides us with extra support are vitamins and supplements.
As far as your libido is concerned, ones that can keep it strong and healthy are pine pollen (it boosts testosterone levels), Korean ginseng (it increases blood circulation) and—yes, this is a real herb—horny goat weed; for centuries, China has used this particular supplement to increase sexual desire as well as treat erectile dysfunction.
2. Snack on Watermelon (if You’re a Man); Drink Some Maca (if You’re a Woman)
Even if you’re not a big breakfast person, do your body—and sex drive—a favour. If you’re a man, have a slice or two of watermelon. Its nickname is “natural Viagra” thanks to the citrulline that’s in it that helps erections to be firmer and last longer.
Is there such a thing as natural Viagra for women? Good question. Something that certainly comes close is the maca root. Because it has so much zinc in it (and zinc helps to keep our libidos healthy and strong), it’s wonderful for women; especially for menopausal ones whose sex drive isn’t as “steady” as it used to be. (Tip: The easiest way to consume this root is by drinking maca green tea.)
3. Get Some Fresh Air
When there are toxins in our body, it affects everything about us; including our libido. Whether it’s in the morning before you go to work, during your lunch break or after dinner, try and take a 15-20 minute walk outdoors three times per week. It will bring fresh air to your lungs as the cardio you’re doing increases blood circulation (including in your genital region). Plus, the Vitamin D (from the sun) will help to increase your testosterone levels too.
4. Make Your Own Massage Oil
If money’s too tight to get a massage from a professional therapist, the next best thing is to massage each other. There are plenty of articles online that can walk you through some great techniques.
The only other thing you need is a little massage oil. You can make some by mixing some neroli essential oil (or any other scent that you like) with a carrier oil like sweet almond or avocado oil. Heat the combination up in the microwave for 5-7 seconds and you’re ready for a truly unforgettable night!
5. Take a Bath (Together)
Always remember that emotionally connecting with your partner is just as important as doing so on a physical level. A wonderfully sensual way to make both things happen is to take a warm bath together. It’s cleansing, relaxing and a sweet—and sexy—way to get some much-needed quality time in together. (Especially if you put some rose petals in the water, turn down the lights and play some soft music in the background.)
6. Light Some Soy Candles
Good sex incorporates all five of your senses—sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell. In order to create the perfect romantic atmosphere and get your sense of smell excited about getting intimate, it never hurts to light some candles. Scents like lavender (calm), rose (desire) and cinnamon (warmth and comfort) are some of our absolute favourites.
Why soy candles? Two reasons. Soy candles are better for the environment. Not only that but they last longer too!
7. Go with White Sheets
Speaking of triggering your sense of smell, another awesome tip is to put a little essential oil on your bedding. One that will definitely put—and keep—you in the mood is patchouli. For one thing, it relieves anxiety and stress. Also, it has an uncanny way of stimulating desire and lowering inhibitions simultaneously. (As a bonus, it’s got an earthy kind of scent that both men and women will enjoy.)
What colour sheets should you put patchouli on? White. Believe it or not, white sheets can do wonders for your sex drive because crisp clean sheets visually trigger our libidos too (which is one of the reasons why most hotel rooms use white sheets).
8. Have an Meal full of Aphrodisiacs
The simplest definition of “aphrodisiac” is something that stimulates sexual arousal. That said, did you know there are foods that can do that for you? Some that top our list are zinc (it regulates sexual hormones), celery (it contains phyto-androgens that increases sexual desire in women), bananas (the potassium in them will help to maintain strong erections), garlic (it increases blood flow to your sexual organs) and chocolate (the anandamide and phenylethylamine in it increases the feel-good hormone in your body called serotonin).
9. Add Some Wine to It
Even if you’re not a wine connoisseur, for the sake of your sex life, try and keep at least one bottle of red wine in your home. Due to all of the antioxidants that’s in it, a glass of wine can boost your immunity, fight heart disease, lower cholesterol, improve brain function and yep, you guessed it—increase your sex drive! The main reason is because it also has the ability to increase testosterone levels after just a couple of sips.
10. Get Some Sound Sleep (Naked)
Even if you follow all of these tips, it’s honestly not going to matter much if you’re not getting a good night’s rest (translation: no less than six hours). It’s what keeps you healthy and your energy levels up. As far as your sex life goes, just make sure that you sleep naked as much as possible.
Sleeping naked will help your skin to “breathe” (which also releases toxins), increases blood circulation, improves sperm quality, keeps your cortisol (stress) hormone balanced and, the skin-to-skin contact is a surefire way to stimulate desire in the middle of the night or just as you’re getting up in the morning (we’ll get into all of the benefits of morning sex in another article!).
Out of all the at-home remedies we’ve provided, this one is our favourite—that’s for sure!
